It should come as no surprise, then, that their judgments and behaviors are influenced by the implicit racial stereotypes that are virtually universally held. Implicit stereotyping is normal human cognition, and police officers are humans. ![]() Like stereotyping more generally, implicit cognition is normal and adaptive, allowing people to process an otherwise overwhelming, constant stream of information flowing into our senses. Furthermore, implicit-stereotype-driven discriminatory behavior has been demonstrated with police samples. They have been demonstrated to influence a range of judgments, decisions, and behaviors, including those relevant to law enforcement. Implicit cognitions, including stereotypes, are those that operate outside of conscious awareness or control. Unintentional causes of racial profiling, particularly implicit stereotypes, are discussed in order to explain why profiling and other forms of discrimination persist in the presence of near-universal condemnation of discrimination and explicit bans on profiling in nearly all law enforcement.
